‘Depressing Time’: Manoj Bajpayee on Satya’s uncertain fate after tragedy

Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee is known for openly speaking his mind and not flustering or faltering in any way.

Recently, he hit a century of films as his latest release, Bhaiyya Ji, is doing good business in cinemas and people are loving Bajpayee’s dashing, violent hero role.

During a recent interview on YouTube, Manoj revealed that there was quite a depressing time in 1998 when he was shooting for ‘Satya’.

Satya is also the film that shot Bajpayee to new heights in Bollywood and people started taking cognizance of the actor as well.

Meanwhile, the actor stated in the interview that the crew faced a frustrating time following the murder of Gulshan Kumar.

Bajpayee gives a detailed picture of the events that happened during Satya’s filming

Speaking about the entire chain of events that took place in the 90s, Bajpayee said,

When I got Satya, I didn’t tell anybody. Not even my roommate and friends in Mumbai. I was always paranoid that the movie might get cancelled, which is what briefly happened. Gulshan Kumar was murdered five days after we began shooting. The film was halted because the producer got scared. Gulshan Kumar’s murder was a huge incident in the industry, and we were making a movie about the Mumbai mafia. The producer got so scared, he shut it down. Our careers, which were just about to begin, were brought to an abrupt halt.

The actor also stated that neither he nor director, Ram Gopal Varma lost hope for Satya and were eager to find a producer for it. Eventually, Bharat Shah stepped in to finance the film and everyone’s problems ended after spending an entire gruelling week.

After about a week, Ram Gopal Varma found Bharat Shah (financer). And then filming began again. We gave Satya our all. That one week was very difficult for us all. None of us had any idea what to do. Satya was our only hope. That uncertainty was very depressing and frustrating. I had decided that I would not lose hope until Ram Gopal Varma says, ‘It’s over. This film won’t be made now.’ But he never said that, he would only say that we’re pausing temporarily. After eight days, we got the good news that we are restarting the film.

The long Bollywood journey of Manoj

Having worked in Bollywood for around 30 years, Bajpayee has many films. Additionally, he has also worked in South cinema as well where he mostly played a supporting part.

His very first film was Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen in 1994. After this, he started gaining prominence through films such as Satya, Kaun, Shool, Zubeidaa, and Aks.

Furthermore, he has also played good supporting roles in films such as Veer Zaara, Raajneeti, Aarakshan, Gangs of Wasseypur, Special 26, Aligarh, and Naam Shabana.

His upcoming projects include an Indo-American film by the name of The Fable and he’s also coming back with The Family Man Season 3 on Amazon Prime Video.

However, Satya remains etched in people’s minds even today for its epic portrayal of the actors and the crucial roles they played in the movie.

The film even took a bit of inspiration from the murder of Gulshan Kumar and that’s what formed the eventual crux of the story. Ram Gopal Varma in his memoir ‘Guns & Thighs’ has revealed that after the sensational murder, he gave a good lookover into the mind of the gangster.

The 1998 film is also credited with launching the careers of several stars in Bollywood who went on to do some great films in the 2000s.

Even today, Bajpayee continues to win hearts in Bollywood for his breakthrough performances.
