20 Years Strong: Mona Singh on her enduring career

Mona Singh celebrated 20 years in the entertainment industry and feels that one cannot change the past but can only celebrate it with their choices over the years.

Additionally, the actress is grateful that she’s still around even after two decades, and it is a journey that started with her starring in the hit serial, ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’ and thanked everyone for giving her the beautiful glory days.

Moreover, her three web series, ‘Made in Heaven’, ‘Kaala Pani’, and ‘Kafas’ on Amazon Prime, Netflix, and SonyLIV, have received critical acclaim from reviewers and fans. In 2023 she completed 20 years in the industry and felt that all three of her series made her special milestone even extra special.

Furthermore, Singh has worked in films such as ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, and the recently released ‘Munjya’. She feels happy that she has been given a chance to portray different characters on screen.

The next step is always forward, the past is gone. You can’t change it, you can celebrate it because of the choices that you have made. I’m very happy these 20 years in this industry have been so fruitful. The industry has been so giving and accepting. I love the fact I am still around and I’m now exploring OTT and films.

Mona Singh excited about new roles and opportunities in the industry

Adding further, she says,

All the releases that I had last year just made 2023 extra special. All three were loved and what was even better was that all characters were so different from one another. I’m just so grateful about these glory days that I’m witnessing. It is true that good things come to those who wait.

Her latest release, Munjya, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar is a horror comedy. Singh is excited to be exploring a whole new genre in her career.

I am so happy about the fact that I’m getting to explore all different genres as an actor. This was a first for me and we shot in some very beautiful, pristine locations in the Konkan region. The script is amazing and funny.

The film is based on a Marathi folktale of the same name and follows an eponymous mythical creature.

This creature creates trauma and havoc in the life of Bittu aka Abhay Verma.

Singh is an overprotective mother in the film who doesn’t want any harm to her son.

Talking about her character, she says,

She runs a salon, she’s independent, fierce, and very possessive of her son. She doesn’t want her son to go out and explore the world because she is possessive about him as a single mother.

Back in the 2000s, the actress became a much-loved television face when she played the role of the nerdy, dependable, and erudite Jassi from the serial, ‘Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi’.

Singh remembers her role as Jassi from the serial and talks about her makeover

Fondly reminiscing about the show, Mona says that she was petrified about the makeup that she underwent for the show.

She also remembers her fans’ shock when they saw her complete transformation in the latter half of the show. She had her braces, fringes and spectacles removed to change into a completely different person.

It was not like she transformed into a new person overnight. It was well shot. The fringes went away, she got the lenses then the braces went away. So it was gradual. I was also very nervous about my makeover. My first show was ‘Jassi…’ and I got to face the camera as ‘Jassi’ which was in a garb. So I was feeling somewhere very protected.
